1. Ulawun, Papua New Guinea. This is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, one of the active volcanoes in the country. The first eruption was recorded in 1700, so the volcano is relatively young and will erupt frequently. During 300 years 22 eruptions have been recorded. In 1980 this volcano burned 20 square kilometers.
2. Mauna Loa – Hawaii. This is one of the largest volcanoes on the planet. Mauna Loa is part of the five volcanoes that form the Hawaiian Islands. This volcano has been erupting for 70 thousand years, the last time the eruption was on March 24, 1984.
3. Taal – Philippines. This volcano is located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines 50 kilometers away from the capital. It erupted many times, because it is very active. The last time it happened in 1977.
4. Nyiragongo – Congo. One of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Africa is Nyiragongo. Since 1882 it has erupted 34 times. Strong eruption of January 17, 2002 destroyed almost half of the city of Goma.
5. Merapi – Indonesia. Indonesia’s most active volcano Mount Merapi erupts very frequently during 500 years. This volcano is located right next to the city of Yogyakarta, so thousands of people actually live on the slopes of the volcano.
6. Galeras – Colombia. This volcano has been actively erupting for at least a million years. It is situated on the border of Ecuador and Columbia. It had been slepping for about 10 years, but woke up and started regularly to erupt in 1988. In 1993 even six scientists and three tourists died there.
7. Sakurajima – Japan. This former island and the most active stratovolcano in the world. It is often called Oriental Vesuvius, and there are almost always clouds of smoke above it. The danger of the volcano lies in the fact that it is located near densely populated areas of the city of Kagoshima.
8. Popocatepetl – Mexico. This is an active and very high volcano (altitude – 5426m). Residents of the city of Puebla, which is located 40 km from the volcano, enjoying its snow-capped peaks. But besides the beauty that the volcano is very dangerous. The last violent eruption occurred in 2000. That time all people from Puebla were evacuated, so the population was not affected.
9. Mount Vesuvius – Italy. This volcano is located 9 km away from Naples and could easily burn half of Italy. Vesuvius is one of the most destructive volcanoes in the world.
10. Yellowstone Caldera – USA. This supervolcano is the most dangerous and active in the world. It is believed that its eruption may end as a real disaster: it can cause disappearing of species and may even bring the end of the world.
