In 2003, a group of astronomers suggested that the bright red color of the sky, which surprised the artist, was caused by the eruption of the volcano Krakatoa in 1883. A large amount of volcanic ash was thrown into the atmosphere, because of which incredibly colorful, fiery sunsets were observed throughout the world for several years.
