As it turned out, it isn’t difficult to get into the “city of the dead”. Of course it is a very scary place. Medieval fortress necropolis is located far away from civilization, 30 kilometers from the nearest settlement. Here there are two rivers – Argun and Meshi-T. Between them there is a mountain rock on the crest of which there are 42 crypts. They were made of stone in the twelfth century.
In fact, it is an island, which is surrounded on all sides by ice water. It is an island where people came to die on their own.
On the territory of Tsoi-Pede remained 46 objects, among them there are 42 crypts, two sanctuaries and two defensive towers.
The local residents had a cult of the dead. It was believed that the dead guard alive, so necropolises were built next to residential buildings.
Road to the Tsoi-Pede is very beautiful, it is located on the Argun gorge.
The river, which flows near the necropolis is narrow and rapid, in some places it becomes wider and more bustling.
The exact date of foundation of “the city of the dead” is unknown, although the researchers attribute the earliest tombs to the fifth century AD. Scientists say that in the 12th century there came people to die.
Some people felt the approach of death, some people came to die during epidemics or because of illness. The man came here, chose the crypt, climbed through the window and lied on a special bunk. If there was already a corpse, it was just dropped down.
Many of the graves were partially destroyed under the influence of time. The first of these could be made of stone 1.5 thousand years ago.
Many of the tombs are destroyed and looted.
But in some there are still preserved human remains.
Stone shelves on each side, that you see in these photo – these are the places, where dying people laid.
And behind the walls of the necropolis there is such beauty!
