The world’s largest naval base is located in the south-east of the bay Hepton-Rhodes near the Atlantic. There are based at least 75 US Navy ships, including aircraft carriers and 5 nuclear carriers.
The water area of the base is on the responsibility of the 2nd operational fleet of the United States. Its area with the port is about 26 square kilometers, and the depth of approaches is almost 14 meters.
Here can be based the ships of all classes, nuclear aircraft carriers, of course, is not an exception.
The base owns ten piers with total length of about twenty kilometers. The depth at the piers also reaches fourteen meters.
Among other things, “Norfolk” is equipped with loading and unloading facilities, there are a storage of oil and ammunition depots.
On the territory of the naval base there are located the headquarters of the High Command of the US Armed Forces, as well as the headquarters of the Chief of the Atlantic Fleet and naval schools.
To carry out repairs of vessels, there were built eight ship-repair and shipbuilding plants, which have seven floating docks.
Finally, as we mentioned, there are based 75 military vessels. Of course, this doesn’t mean that they all base here at the same time.
There is also a floating hospital, one of them is on this photo. By the way, it can accommodate up to four thousand sick or injured people, in case of hostilities.
The US Navy is very well equipped, it is the most powerful in the world. On the basis there are many different warships.
Here also base nuclear submarines, which, however, don’t stay all at once at the base, many are on different tasks.
And of course, nuclear aircraft carriers. We must say that these combat vehicles are completely autonomous. They can stay at sea for a long period, even for several months.
Every carrier has a team of no less than three thousand people, maybe even more.
This is not surprising, as the carrier requires maintenance, and there is a lot of work on it. In addition, each giant transports up to 90 combat aircrafts and helicopters.
