Banqiao Dam, Henan Province, Chinese People’s Republic, 1975
Banqiao is a groundwater dam, built in 1952 to protect from flooding. Gross errors that were made during the construction of the dam led to cracks. Subsequently, the dam could not stand the pressure of a tropical typhoon “Nina” and the flooding led to 26 000 deaths.
